On 29 June 1950, at the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the United States defeated England 1–0 in a group match. The event is also known as the “Miracle on Grass”. The match was played in Belo Horizonte at Estádio Independência. The game and the U.S. team were profiled by author Geoffrey Douglas in his book The Game of Their Lives as football for both countries have been a rivalry game, which was made into a film of the same name (later renamed to The Miracle Match).

Both shows basically went with a stereotype, and amped it up to the max. Which I think still counts as satire. The Daily Show sent “correspondent” John Oliver to the USA’s pre World Cup training camp to play the faux-arrogant Englishman convinced that the USA is “the clown college of football”. Watch below: Following the The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert continued Comedy Central’s World Cup coverage on The Colbert Report, basically taking the role of the reactionary, soccer-hating American and amping it up to the max. Despite the (feigned?) ignorance, Colbert does come up with a workable plan for the USA to beat England. World Cup segment starts about 2 minutes and 45 seconds in: Good stuff. On the surface it’s massively insulting to both the US national team and the sport of soccer as a whole, but think on it a little and it’s just two satirical caricatures of two aspects of the two different teams. Plus it’s funny. Will England Bring the Trophy Home?

The English football team have managed to reach the quarter finals of the Fifa World Cup, will this finally be the year that football comes back home for the first time since 1966? Despite not playing their best football, England are still in the tournament and must have a great chance of lifting the trophy.

Some might say that I am biased as I am from England myself and am an avid England supporter, however I really feel that 2006 could be the year for our boys out there in Germany. This may of course be all blown away on Saturday when the team face Portugal and big Phil Scolari. Scolari has been the manager of the last two teams who have knocked England out of the last two major tournaments and therefore will pose a big threat to my team. He was the manager of the Brazil team that beat England in the 2002 World Cup and he was and still is the manager of the Portugal team that beat England in the 2004 European Championship. I am hoping that it will be third time lucky for the English this year.

To say that England are yet to peak is a bit of an understatement as they have in truth been well below par. This could however be quite a good thing, how many times have Germany scraped through to the final stages of the tournament without thrilling the crowds?

With Wayne Rooney becoming stronger and fitter this has to be the best opportunity that England has had for quite some time. There are many leaders and potential captains in the English team. Players like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard would all make worthy captains when David Beckham decides to give up this role. As well as potential captains, these players are also what I call winners and when push comes to shove hopefully will deliver the goods.

Argentina, Brazil and Germany could prove to be the biggest dangers to England. After a slow start Ronaldo seems to have found his scoring boots again and the Brazil team has some great players all over the park. I have to say that I am getting quite bored of them winning however, surely its the turn of England this time around.

Germany have played some great football on their home turf and seem to building up a head of steam. They could prove quite difficult to stop and always seem to do well in the World Cup.

Many people would argue that Argentina have probably played the best football so far and that they are worthy favourites. I would have to agree with this and just hope that they have peaked too soon.

It certainly would be a great summer in England if our team can bring football home to where it belongs this year. Good luck England.

World Cup Gifts For England Fans – South Africa 2010

In the summer of 2010 the biggest event in sport kicks off in South Africa, the World Cup Football Finals. All of the great international teams will gather to fight for the right to take home the World Cup trophy and be crowned champions of the football world for the next four years. Among the favourites to win are Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Germany and England. There will also be strong competition from the African nations, particularly the Ivory Coast and possibly the hosts, South Africa. The big name players are all involved, Christiano Ronaldo, Loinel Messi, Fernando Torrez, Wayne Rooney and Michael Ballack will all be desperate to win for their countries.

For those without tickets to see the games in South Africa there are plenty of ways to get involved and lots of superb memorabilia to collect. In England the most popular item is the flag of Saint George. Every time there is a big sporting occasion which England are involved in the whole country goes St. George crazy. Flags adorn houses, shops and offices and can be see in the windows of cars and trucks. The simple red cross on a white background is the proud emblem of a nation getting behind the team they love.

The English Football Association (The FA) have launched a very simple new football kit for the 2010 World Cup. Gone are the loud designs of the past, replaced with a simple white shirt with a small collar. The players number is positioned on the front of the shirt in red, right in the centre, with the famous three lions crest on the breast. The players name and number also appear in red on the reverse of the shirt. The effect is a timeless garment which any England fan would be proud to wear. The England ‘away’ kit is not unlike the famous red shirts that the 1966 World Cup winning squad wore on their victorious day.

There are other collectible items such as scarves, hats and T shirts. If you are not interested in garments there are many books and CD’s for sale, with profiles of the players and footage of the goals and highlights that got England to the finals. There are some brilliant novelty items too like the England World Cup rubber duck or the superb dancing, singing fan toy that sings England chants and looks like a true England fan in a replica shirt and jeans.

For many, buying World Cup memorabilia is just a great way to support the team, others start collections which become valuable over the years. There is a huge market for rare, collectible items, such as the World Cup Willie toys from the 1966 finals.

England and Manchester City star player, Gareth Barry is unavailable for four weeks due to ankle injury. Gareth Barry also remains doubtful for England’s 2010 Football World Cup squad.

Gareth Barry picked up injury in their match against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday. In that match, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester City with 1-0 score. On Thursday, Gareth Barry approached specialist to find the full extent of the injury and also asked specialist whether he will be available for 2010 Football World Cup or not.

On Tuesday, England manager, Fabio Capello announced 30-man squad for 2010 Football World Cup. Fabio Capello will be reduced his team to 23 players after friendly matches against Mexico and Japan. USA look to shock England in opener
When England entered their first World Cup in 1950, they went down to a famous 1-0 defeat at the hands of the amateurs of USA in a match that became known as the ‘Miracle on Grass’.

The game has come a long way in America since that match and, while most firmly expect an England victory in Rustenburg on Saturday, an upset would hardly be viewed as miraculous.

England have mixed feelings going into the 2010 tournament. While Fabio Capello has turned the team around following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008, winning all but one of his competitive matches, the disjointed performances in the warm-up games for South Africa have done little to inspire confidence.

USA, though, have also struggled to convince during their warm-up matches, and it is largely the memories of last year’s 2-0 victory over Spain in the Confederations Cup that will provide hope of a win in what represents a huge match for both countries.

“For the last six months, all we’ve seen is US-England, so if you’re a casual sports fan at home you might think this is the World Cup final,” USA star Landon Donovan said in his press conference ahead of the game. “We’re not like Brazil where if they don’t win the World Cup soccer is still the biggest thing in anyone’s mind, but this is a great opportunity to grow the sport.”

USA could adopt a 4-5-1 formation for the match with Jozy Altidore as a lone striker, with Japan enjoying success against England using the same formation as they dominated the midfield battle. With Donovan and Clint Dempsey out wide, the tactic would not be overly defensive.

England have largely used 4-4-2, and a change seems unlikely at this stage, but it was only when Joe Cole was brought on as a substitute against Japan that England were able to compete in the middle, so Capello’s hand may be forced.

USA coach Bob Bradley has said all 23 players in his squad are ready to play the full 90 minutes, although Oguchi Onyewu’s lack of match practice in recent months remains a concern. For England, Gareth Barry’s absence could prove problematic given the lack of an alternative holding midfielder in the squad.

England player in focus: Aaron Lennon. England’s right winger has often been central to hopes of unlocking opposition defences and, while Joe Cole should offer creativity from the left, Lennon could become the focus if his team struggle. He’ll come up against an experienced opponent in USA captain Carlos Bocanegra, the former Fulham man who now plays in Ligue 1 with Rennes, so Fabio Capello will hope the Tottenham man can rediscover his pre-injury form on the big stage.

USA player in focus: Landon Donovan. This pacy attacker is very much the star of the USA team and he can provide a real threat out wide, frequently swapping flanks with Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. The English defenders will be fully aware of his capabilities following his loan stint with Everton earlier this year, and Ashley Cole may be a little wary of facing the man whose tackle nearly ruled him out of the tournament. If Donovan gets a chance to play on the left flank, Glen Johnson will need to curtail his natural instinct to support the attack.

Key battle: Wayne Rooney v Oguchi Onyewu. Rooney finally ended an international goal drought with his strike in the warm-up match against Platinum Stars, but he may have the chance to really kick-start his England career on Saturday. USA centre back Onyewu, the former Newcastle loanee, joined AC Milan from Standard Liege last summer but made just one appearance in Serie A after suffering a knee injury on international duty. USA coach Bob Bradley believes Onyewu is fit to play the full 90 minutes but, as he has not appeared in any of the warm-up games, it is essential that he gets back up to speed from the off.

Trivia: England boss Fabio Capello gave USA coach Bob Bradley some help and insights into the world of management during his time at AC Milan in the 1990s.

Stats: Wayne Rooney was involved in more goals than any other player in Europe during the qualification campaign, with nine goals and five assists. USA have not kept a clean sheet in a World Cup finals match since beating England 1-0 in 1950.

Odds: England (1.50), the draw (4.20), USA (7.00) with Bet365. USA are 15.00 to win 1-0, which could be worth a flutter.

Prediction: USA showed they are capable of causing shocks in the Confederations Cup last year, and their experience in South Africa may give them an advantage in terms of adapting to the altitude. However, England are firm favourites for the match and should have enough to clinch a victory.
