Lets begin. Comedy Central’s USA vs England Preview June 11th, 2010 | by: Daryl | Comments Comments (0) colbert One of the more interesting aspects of the the American media’s coverage of the USA vs England game (and World Cup 2010 in general) is seeing outlets that don’t normally cover soccer suddenly pay attention to the beautiful game. I was half excited and half nervous to see how Comedy Central’s satirical sister shows The Daily Show and The Colbert Robert handled it. Both shows basically went with a stereotype, and amped it up to the max. Which I think still counts as satire. The Daily Show sent “correspondent” John Oliver to the USA’s pre World Cup training camp to play the faux-arrogant Englishman convinced that the USA is “the clown college of football”. Watch below: Following the The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert continued Comedy Central’s World Cup coverage on The Colbert Report, basically taking the role of the reactionary, soccer-hating American and amping it up to the max. Despite the (feigned?) ignorance, Colbert does come up with a workable plan for the USA to beat England. World Cup segment starts about 2 minutes and 45 seconds in: Good stuff. On the surface it’s massively insulting to both the US national team and the sport of soccer as a whole, but think on it a little and it’s just two satirical caricatures of two aspects of the two different teams. Plus it’s funny. For some far less entertaining, but arguably more useful information about tomorrow’s England vs USA game, have a read of our USA vs England preview and listen to our USA vs England podcast.

Teams Report:

A wonderful match between the top two teams in the soccer world. Both teams has a great history in the soccer.

Even though Egypt is having the three successive African Cup of Nations Victories, but the big disappointment for them is, Egypt lost the play-off match against Algeria in the qualifier match of 2010 Football World Cup.

England team is thinking that this match is very crucial before the 2010 Football World Cup and it helps them as a warmup match for the upcoming World Cup. So that they came to know about the players performances in this match.

England Star player Wayne Rooney is in good perform. But it is so important for him to continue with same form and fitness to get success in the 2010 Football World Cup.

Should The UK Get To have Four National Football Teams Representing Them?

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as it is formally known is one nation under one flag with all its citizens holding one passport and one nationality yet they have four national football teams to represent them. This despite the fact that they are a nation with a population that is about the size of Germany with territorial space that is half the size of France. All of which in my opinion making it unfair that they be allowed to present four national football teams to the world cup when all other nations are only allowed one.

Of course, in this argument I am aware that the average Briton would respond that they are four nations that make up one. This being the case since the UK is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which to a certain extent are not the same country though all their inhabitants are considered subjects (not citizens since they are a constitutional monarchy) of the same country yet it is to this argument that I would respond in the following manner. Before its disintegration the USSR or CCCP was also one nation comprised of many different nationalities, after all that is why it was called the “Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics” with an emphasis on the word republics; among them being Ukraine, Latvia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Estonia and other countries. It even being a case where some of these countries were larger than not only England but the UK as a whole and had even been for the most part of their history completely independent yet despite this factor the Soviet Union played as one nation and not each republic independently.

Another argument presented by the British to keep the present situation and this one perhaps being the strongest, is that since England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own separate football leagues; they should also have their own national teams. As that is how it has always been. I however fail to see this as reason to justify four national teams to represent one country and again I use the case of the Soviet Union. It being they who also could have easily established or allowed separate leagues in each Republic that was a part of their country and by doing so they also would have had several teams to represent them in world football which in their case would have been 13 national teams.

The UK however is represented by one team during the Olympics as they are in many sports though for the reason of separate leagues they are not in either football or rugby yet I feel that if they can make one team to represent them in some sports then they should be able or rather be forced to do the same in football and rugby as well. Regarding the next Olympic games to take place in London however, it has already been decided that there will be for the first time a football team called UK.

Of course I am also aware that a lot of people from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England would not be happy with one team to represent them but if one thinks over the matter; it is unfair to the rest that they should get four teams when everybody else only gets one. I however for my part feel that a united team would be stronger and have more depth as I could imagine how it would have been back in the sixties to see George Best on the same team with Bobby Charlton. This a combination that obviously worked for Manchester United in 68 when they won the European championship. As for other combinations which also could have proven suitable on the field, I could think of Jordan, Keegan, Dalglish and Brookings in the 70s or Lineker, Shilton, Rush, Armstrong and Whiteside in the 80s or Gigs and Gascoigne in the 90s yet it was not to be though perhaps it should have been.

Another reason perhaps why one team would be a good thing for all is that in all reality England is the strongest of these teams. As they have the best record of the four in the world cup by far; this leading to many players from the other countries choosing to play for England. This given that with England they stand a much better chance of not only playing in the world cup but of possibly even winning it.

This the case since in all frankness, Northern Ireland has only qualified to three world cups with their last appearance being in 86 in which they failed to make the second round or even win a match. It also being that probably their greatest player; “George Best” never got to taste the glory of a world cup.

As for Wales, though theirs was to play well and go out with their dignity in 58 (after only loosing 1-0 to a great Brazilian team in quarterfinals); they have not qualified to another world cup since or even really come all that close to doing so. All of which perhaps making some Welsh players choose to play for England instead given how they may present a case of having lived in England longer than in Wales and since the nationality is the same; it should not represent a problem to choose England over Wales.

As for Scotland, I have come to believe (jokingly of course) that if four out of four teams could move on in to the second round; they would find a way not to qualify. This being the situation since in 7 world cups and 2 European cups, they never managed to go beyond the first round. This despite the fact that in the 86 and 90 world cups which they played in, 16 out of 24 teams qualified. Actually looking back they would have qualified to the next round in 82 had they been using the system which was used in the 86, 90 and 94 world cups but unfortunately for the Scots it was not. Scotland would also manage the feat of not qualifying further than the first round in the European championship in 96 which by virtue of being held in England was practically played in their own country.

Regarding England, it is they who are the most successful team to come from the British isles since it is they who have not only won a World Cup but have managed a fourth place and to qualify to most of the world cups they have participated in yet I wonder how much stronger their team would have been with Best in Mexico 70 or Jordan, Gemmil and Dalglish in 74 and 78 or with Gigs in 2002. All of which making me of the idea that perhaps it is high time the British thought of having one strong team instead of four weaker ones.

In conclusion I would like to claim that I believe (along with many others) that it is really unfair that one country get to have four teams to represent them even if they have four leagues, as the Soviet Union with all its republics could have easily done likewise yet choose to have one team represent them. Naturally in all this, I am equally aware that such thinking could lead some to ask if it is really fair that the UK also get to have more teams represent them in European cups such as the Champion’s League and UEFA Cup?

Are the Football Shirts More Famous From a Particular Country?

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

When you think of football shirts, the first country that comes to mind is England. Manchester United has dominated football shirt sales for years, and they are not likely to fall off any time soon. I’m sure there are many countries that would argue the point, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that the UK, particularly England, continues to hold the title as the country with the most famous football shirts.

From Manchester United to Middlesbrough to Celtic United, UK teams have always set the standard for football shirts. It only makes sense because football was created in England, so the traditions and styles of football wear were established there first. The famous red vest with white arms of the Arsenal defined an era of football in England. Everyone would recognize the basic elements of football shirts that came out of the English tradition. The three stripes on the shoulder of short sleeved shirts, or the alternating vertical stripes that are so commonly used in football shirts are two examples.

As football continues to be an international game, countries outside of the United Kingdom are beginning to set trends as well. Several innovative designs are coming out of countries like Brazil or Germany, where football is a matter of national pride.

England’s various teams have always set the standard for football shirt design. If you see a color pattern or design on a football shirt and believe you’ve seen it before, it’s probably been a design worn by a team from the United Kingdom.

The famous players who wear the shirts also have a lot to do with how famous a shirt is. The shirt’s fame can also hinge on when it was worn and how well a team did. The 1966 World Cup Final shirt that was worn by England is famous for its simplicity – a red shirt with the simple white English crest on the chest. The 1968 Manchester United shirt that was worn in the European Cup Final is famous for its unusual dark blue color, and for the famous players who wore it when Manchester United won the European Cup.

Some famous shirts from outside of the UK have much to do with the men who wore them. The 1986 blue and white striped Argentina shirt reminds fans of the year Diego Maradona helped lead Argentina to a World Cup victory. The football shirt worn by Pele in Brazil’s 1970 World Cup win is also pretty well known internationally. Football fans are known for their loyalty, so the question of whose football shirts are most famous could draw some pretty intense arguments. Most fans would, of course, declare their own country’s shirts as the best and most famous. I believe that the tradition and longstanding domination of the football teams from England would have to give them the edge in this competition. The shirts may change from year to year, but England has always set the style for football shirts around the world.

Its Spain and Its Football Watch Out Real and Barca Here Come Deportivo and Celta Vigo

It was once said about visiting Galicia and visiting Santiago de Compostela that don’t even think about leaving without seeing Corunna.

Corona, when it’s not raining seems to be one of those super cities in life where everybody appears to enjoy staying outdoors and enjoying the superb surroundings they find themselves in.

Corunna is one of those cities that is blessed with small amounts of virtually everything. It has a really nice harbour, good beach great seafood, good night life, some splendid architecture, some great places to get away from it all and if you like your sport has a football team that in the last 10 to 12 years to be brutally blunt has come from nowhere to take Europe by storm.

This last fact seems to have given citizens of Corona and the surrounding area and increased shot in the arm and acted as a great confidence boost all round.

The activities of Deportivo La Corunna appear to have shaken the established hierarchy of La Liga and in the last 10-12 years really given the twin powers of Real Madrid and Barcelona something to think about.

Corunna though, is a lot more than just some nice night life, good food and a half decent football team. It is one of the most enjoyable cities in Spain but also manages to achieve this with the fact that it is a working port and commercial centre for the rest of the region of Galicia as well.

Corunna is or should be one of the strategically important places in Spain and indeed one of the most romantic episodes of the Peninsula War between 1808 and 1812 took place when the forces from Napoleon forced a much smaller British force led by Sir John Moore to retreat back along the northern coast and finally to take a stand at Corunna.

During the fateful battle at Corunna on 16th January 1809, the British Commander, Sir John Moore was wounded fatally and died with one of the last acts carried out by the British Army before escaping back via sea to England (despite the fact that the Battle of Corunna was actually claimed by the British as a victory) was to actually bury their fallen Commander on the ramparts of Corunna.

The site of the grave of Sir John Moore is in the centre of the Jardines San Carlos, a rather romantic and beautiful gardens lying on the site of the old fortress walls of Corunna.

Corunna has lots of appeal and loads to see. Not to be missed.

A World Cup For A Non American Football

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Which is the greatest team sports’ event? For most US Americans the “Super Bowll” would be an easy answer. Others, mostly attracted by baseball, basketball, or hockey, would choose one of those sports’ finals or all-star games, but this is not the case for the rest of the world. Outside of the US when people say football they refer to the sport that is known as soccer in United States and which is by far the most popular sport in all of the five continents. The World Cup that takes place over a four-year period is considered as the most important athletic competition, being more widely-viewed on TV exceeding even the Olympic Games. In 2002, when North Korea and Japan co-hosted the World Cup the cumulative TV audience was estimated to be 28.8 billion, while 1.1 billion individuals watched the final match of the tournament between Brazil and Germany.

This year the World Cup takes place in Germany with the first mach between Germany and Costa Rica being scheduled on 9th of June and the last one, the final game which is going to take place one month later on the 9th of July in Berlin. Thirty-two national teams are participating in this great “party” of world soccer and they will play in a total of twelve German cities. Among the national teams, which participate 14 come from Europe, 5 from Africa, 4 from South America, 4 from Asia, 4 from North and Central America and 1 from Oceania.

Brazil is the defending Word Champion and one of the great favorites of wining the trophy this year. The Brazilians have already won the World Cup five times and are the most successful team in the competition’s history. This year, legendary coach Pareira has at his disposal some of the most talented football players of the world: Kaka, Adriano, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and of course Ronaldinho the World Player of the Year for the last two years.

As strong contenders for the title are considered, by soccer experts and bookmakers, the team of Germany, which will play in front of its audience as the host-nation, and that of England, Argentina and Italy. In addition, the Brazilians, the French striker Thierry Henry, the Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko, the English midfielder Frank Lampard, the German midfielder Michael Ballack and the new star of the Argentinean football Lionel Messi are players one will enjoy watching.

The United States’ national team is assigned in the Group E and will face Italy, Ghana and the Czech Republic in the first stage of the tournament, giving its first game in Gelsenkirchen on the 12th of June against the Czechs. Coach Bruce Arena has his team believing that their mix of young talents such as DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan and old campaigners like Claudio Reyna and Brian McBride could be enough to go further than the quarter-finals where they reached in 2002.

There are many assumptions about soccer’s low popularity in the United States, but the most convincing one seem to be the fact that the American national team didn’t have any serious accomplishments during the last years in order to attract their country’s attention and interest. The boys of Bruce Arena will have their opportunity now inside the German stadiums.

Collecting Big Match Football Programmes

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Big Match programmes are those that are considered to be very widely collectable by supporters of any football club or international team. The sub-categories within this set are endless. A collector could choose to collect programmes for a specific team, country, competition, or any other weird and wonderful combination that can be imagined.

The most obvious type of Big Match is a cup final of a competition such as the FA Cup or League Cup. These collections can be limited to a certain date, depending on how ambitious you are with your collection. Another source of programmes are sponsored tournaments. Competitions such as the Autoglass Trophy, Watney Cup and Texaco Cup are a little harder to acquire and give us an interesting segment of the history of competitive football, especially when the cup is now defunct.

Programme collectors who are particularly enthusiastic about European based competitions will be interested in those printed for the European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup, European Super Cup. Those programme collectors who have a passion for non-league football would look for programmes relating to the FA Trophy, FA Vase Finals and the FA Amateur Cup Finals. In both of these categories, collectors would aim to go beyond the scope of finals, and may collected the varied styles of the semi-finals and quarter-finals programmes.

Also worth considering in this category are the programmes printed for international fixtures. British collectors will often collect the four home nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in friendlies, qualification and tournaments. Some may even decide to add a fifth nation to their collection and collect programmes for the Republic of Ireland. Of course, there are also several options within the context of international matches, when one considers Under 21, Youth and Schools level.

The proliferation of European soccer matches from the Champions League, UEFA Cup, Intertoto Cup and various others on television in recent years has increased the demand for programmes from this category of competition. There are many potential avenues to explore in this subset of programmes, such as home and away matches from a particular team’s campaign, or the involvement of British clubs within any given competition. One of the advantages of exploring this subset is the fairly recent development of these types of matches, having occurred only in the last sixty years.

All of the different sets described would make for a very interesting collection to a programme enthusiast. Due to the difficulty in obtaining match programmes from often quite remote corners of the globe for international matches, perhaps your greatest tool in acquiring additions to your collection is through programme dealers and shops. The Big Match issues will be well stocked as these are in demand from clients due to their contextual value, and potential added value they may acquire in the future. These sorts of programmes will be resalable in the future as they make up part of football history.

English Football Losing Element of Surprise

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

For the last few years the English Premiership is dominated by 4 club, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool. These teams always sit on the top 4 of the table and play in the Champions League from time to time. The other 16 teams can only compete for 5th place without ever dreaming to step up to the top 4.

This domination is not something extraordinary since these 4 have the ability and resources to become the rulers of English football. They also proved to be the most stable teams in the league and able to maximize whatever they have.

However, I’m worried about this domination. I’m afraid that English football will lose the element of surprise because no other teams in England can break their domination. Whenever these 4 play, they will surely win because of their unmatched quality. It’s difficult to imagine that a team like Watford can win agains Chelsea, for instance. Then, football will lose the element of surprise and potentially lose its attractiveness also. Football could become boring because we know who will win the game.

Something must be done to keep English football stay competitive and entertaining. One thing that makes these 4 teamn dominate is their star quality players with expensive salaries. Small teams can’t afford big players with high salaries, so it is understandable if Watford can’t compete Chelsea or Liverpool. If smaller teams can afford to pay expensive players, then there’s a good chance that they can fight with those top 4 teams. Maybe salary cap rules can narrow this gap, like what they did in the NBA.

Football Fans ’struggling to Meet Rising Costs’

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Football fans are finding that “life is getting harder” when it comes to managing their personal finances, according to new figures from Virgin Money.

The announcement comes as the financial services firm reports that the surging cost of attending football matches is causing fewer fans to go to live games. According to the company, increasing expenses will see about one in ten (nine per cent) Premiership supporters reduce how many times they will get behind their team in person, as they face rising pressure on areas of their finances such as credit cards and personal loans.

Overall, Middlesbrough and Chelsea fans are said to be the most apathetic in watching live games as 24 and 19 per cent of supporters from these clubs claim that they will not be attending their respective stadiums as much. Blackburn Rovers fans on the other hand, are least likely to reduce their attendance to matches as there are only two per cent that are considering attending less games.

Meanwhile, consumers are reported to be “feeling the pinch” as they start to feel the effects of five base rate rises by the Bank of England since August 2006. And with a decrease in disposable income noted, in addition to a rise in football-related costs, the company suggests that attendances could be set to dwindle more in the future as less money is spent on merchandise.

John Franklin, spokesperson for Virgin Money, said: “The ordinary football fan is up against it this year. While it’s true that some clubs have frozen or even reduced ticket prices, our analysis shows that the overall cost of following your team continues to rise. And while perhaps last season fans were able to ride the storm thanks to some favourable market conditions, the effects of five interest rate rises will make life very difficult for many. Financially life is getting tougher, but dedicated fans won’t want to sacrifice following their team as a result.”

Virgin Money’s announcement comes as its latest Football Fans Price Index reveals that the cost of attending matches has increased by 22 per cent since February last year. The ‘match day expenditure’ including tickets, and programmes etc was reported to cost
