England Players Profiles - Aaron Lennon

Aaron Justin Lennon, the right winger, has a colorful mix of English, Irish and Jamaican heritage.  He has a younger brother and sister and was educated at Boston Spa School in Leeds where he was born.

Lennon played for the Leeds United Academy as a schoolboy and when he signed with Adidas at the enviable age of 14, he set his first record as the youngest player to have his football boots sponsored.

His early professional career got off to a good start when he joined Leeds United as a right winger and through this he took another title, this time for being the youngest footballer to appear in the Premier League.  He was only 16 years and 129 days old.

In June 2005 Lennon moved to Tottenham Hotspur in a £1 Million deal, debuting for the club that August against Chelsea.  He still plays for them today, and has signed a deal which runs until 2014.  He was nominated by his team mates for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award on three occasions, but  missed out, the awards going to Wayne Rooney, Christiano Ronaldo and Ashley Young instead.

Lennon was called up to the England U21 squad in October 2005 when he played against Austria, and went on to be part of the FIFA World Cup team in 2006 even though he had never appeared for the seniors.  That honour didn’t come until June 2006 when he debuted for the senior team against Jamaica in a resounding 6-0 win.

In March 2007 Lennon started for England for the first time in an UEFA qualifier played against Israel and went on to start against Andorra, Slovakia and the Ukraine.  His last appearance was against Belarus on 14 October 2009.

Lennon’s career so far has seen him win Player and Young Player of the Year awards from Spurs, and ultimately the PFA Fan’s player of the Month in early 2009.
