England Players Profiles - Ashley Young

Ashley Simon Young was born in Stevenage in Hertfordshire to a British mother and Jamaican father.  He was educated at the John Henry Newman School in Hertfordshire and grew up with three brothers, one of whom plays for Watford and another who is training at the Arsenal Academy.

Young’s early career began in Watford where, despite having been unsuccessful with their Academy, he was offered a contract and debuted for them in September 2003 when he scored against Millwall after coming on as a substitute.  He impressed with a further 5 appearances as a substitute, scoring a total of 3 goals for his side and eventually made his first start for the club in the League Cup.

Young was with Watford when they moved up to the Premier League and after an impressive first season several offers were made for him.  None were accepted until Aston Villa’s offer in January 2007 which was just short of £10 million.  Young signed and debuted for them the same month.

His International appearances began for the U21’s in February 2006 when he played for England against Italy.  He appeared again against Switzerland in the same year.  He impressed during the UEFA European U21 Championship when they faced Netherlands in a penalty shootout which they lost 13-12.  Young scored two of the penalty goals.

On 31 August 2007 Young was called-up to play for the Senior squad in their Euro 2008 qualifiers, facing Russia, Israel and Estonia but only debuted during a friendly against Austria in November 2007 when he came on as a half time substitute for Joe Cole.

Young started for England in August 2009 in a friendly against Holland.

He won the Young Player of the Year Award for 2008-2009 and was awarded Player of the Month twice in the same season.  In 2009 Young was awarded Player of the Tournament in the Peace Cup.
