England Players Profiles - Ben Foster

Ben Foster was born in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire in 1983 and began his football career in 2000 when he joined Racing Club Warwick.  A season later he moved to Stoke City but he wasn’t able to find a permanent place on the first team, and gained experience through a series of loans to teams such as Bristol City, Wrexham, Tiverton Town, Kidderminster Harriers and Stafford Rangers.

His first transfer came in July 2005 when he played in the Football League Trophy Final.  He was spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson and a bid for £1 million came in from Manchester United on 15 July 2005.

His first experience of Manchester United came in the form of a season long loan to Watford to gain vital experience.  A crucial game in the  Championship playoff final against Leeds United, which Watford won 3 - 0, saw Foster help his adoptive team into the Premier League.  He re-signed with the club for a second season during which his performance saw him win the Player of the Season Award.

Called back to Manchester United for the 2007-2008 season, he missed the early matches thanks to surgery on his knee, so it wasn’t until 6 March 2008, in a reserves match against Middlesbrough, that he finally had a comeback, with his debut for the first team coming shortly afterwards on 15 March 2008.  He has worn the Number 1 Jersey for Manchester United on and off over the following seasons.

Foster’s first taste of International football came in 2006 when he was placed on the stand-by list for England’s World Cup 2006 team, however, he didn’t make his debut for the squad until 7 February 2007 in a match against Spain, which England lost 1 - 0.  His best game for England came when he played his 3rd cap in a match against Belarus in the 2009-2010 season.  England won the game 3 - 0, partly thanks to a one-handed save by Foster in the 63rd minute of the match.

Foster was awarded the Alan Hardaker Trophy for Man of The Match in 2009.
