England Players Profiles - Darren Bent

Born in South London in 1984, Darren Bent moved to Cambridgeshire a decade later where he began playing for  Godmanchester Rovers Youth

When he was 14 he joined Ipswich Town’s youth team, eventually signing a professional contract with them in July 2001.  He made his first professional debut for them in November 2001 when he appeared in the UEFA Cup against Helsingborgs IF.

In 2005 Bent transferred to Charlton Athletic in a £2.5 million deal. He scored two goals in the first match of the season against Sunderland and became the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League that season.  He became Charlton’s top goal-scorer for the 2006-2007 season and declined a bid from West Ham which came in June 2007.

At the end of June 2007 Bent accepted another offer, this time from Tottenham Hotspur for a club record of £16.5 million.  His two year career with Spurs saw him score goals consistently during both seasons, including a hat-trick against Dinamo Zagreb on 6 November 2008 and two goals in two minutes against Bolton Wanderers in January 2009.

By the end of the 2008-2009 season, Bent had attracted enough attention from Sunderland that they placed a bid to get him, eventually signing a deal worth £10 million basic with additional payments that could eventually make the contract worth £16.5 million.

Bent proved his worth when he scored the only goal in his debut match against Bolton and went on to score a hat trick in their 4-0 win against Bolton in March 2010.

Bent represented England at all youth levels and eventually got his call up to the senior squad on 17 August 2005 when they played a friendly against Denmark.  However, Bent didn’t debut for the International side until March 2006 when he appeared in the FIFA World Cup friendly against Uruguay.  His last match was against Brazil on 14 November 2009

Bent was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month for August 2005.
