England Players Profiles - David James

David James, the 6’4” England Goalkeeper was born in Hertfordshire in 1970 and was educated at the Sir Frederic Osborn School in Welwyn Garden City.

James’ early career began with Watford Youth whom he helped win the FA Youth Cup.  He moved onto a league career with Watford in 1990, debuting on 25 August in a 1-2 defeat to Millwall.  In the 1990-1991 season he kept his team from relegation and an interested Liverpool signed him up for £1.25 million on 6th July 1992.

On 16th August in that year he debuted for his new club in a league match against Nottingham Forest, which they lost 1-0.  His career suffered some knocks after some disappointing defeats and eventually, after 277 games with Liverpool, he moved to Aston Villa for £1.8 million.

James remained with Aston Villa for two seasons, making only 85 appearances for the club, and on 11th July 2001 he signed a four year contract with West Ham United for £3.5 million.

His career with West Ham was almost as short.  A knee injury kept him from starting until the November and after playing for over 100 matches he was released early to Manchester City who were looking for a replacement for David Seaman.

On 17th January 2004 James debuted for the club in a match against Blackburn Rovers which ended in a draw at home.  He played for Manchester City for two years, taking part in qualifiers for the UEFA Cup, and on 10th August 2006, citing personal reasons, he requested a transfer to take him back South.  He signed a contract with Portsmouth for £1.2 million just two days afterwards.

James’ career continued with Portsmouth and he earned the record of the most appearances in the Premier League on 14th February 2009 when he played his 536th game.

At an International level, James played his first match for England against Mexico and kept the opposition's score to nil.  He became the team’s regular goalkeeper in 2002 when Seamen was dropped from position and has played on and off for the squad ever since.  His last start was against the Ukraine in the World Cup qualifier on 1st April 2009.
