England Players Profiles - John Terry |
John Terry, the London-born defender, was brought up by his parents, Ted and Sue Terry in Barking and was educated at Eastbury Comprehensive School. He played for Sunday League team, Senrab and then moved to join Chelsea’s youth team when he was 14 years old. He originally played in the midfield, but thanks to Chelsea’s shortage in defence, he took up that position and has continued to play there ever since. |

Terry debuted for the Chelsea senior team in October 1998 and apart from a loan period to Nottingham Forrest in 2000, he has remained with the club throughout his career.

His sound performance in the early years meant that in the 2003 - 2004 season he picked up the Captain’s armband when Desailly was out of action. The following season he was handed the armband officially, taking up his role as the Chelsea team Captain which he is yet to give up.

In 2007 Terry reconfirmed that he wanted to remain with Chelsea and signed a new five-year deal with a salary of no less than £131,000 per week. That fee meant that he was the top earner in the Premier League at that time. |

Terry debuted for the England squad in June 2003 when he appeared against Serbia and Montenegro and has appeared consistently since then. He picked up the Captain’s armband in a FIFA World Cup qualifier after the then Captain, Michael Owen, was substituted. On 10 August 2006 he took over the captaincy from David Beckham and scored a goal against Greece in the debut appearance in his new role. He kept this status until February 2010 when, after scandal hit the headlines, he was replaced as Captain by Rio Ferdinand.

Terry has won several accolades during his career to date, including PFA Player of the Year 2004-2005, and Chelsea Player of the Year in 2001 and 2006.
