England Players Profiles - Phil Jagielka

Phil Jagielka was born in Sale, Greater Manchester in 1982 but is of Polish descent.  His brother, Stephen, plays for AFC Telford United.  He grew up playing youth football for the Hale Barns team, and after being spotted by scouts, joined the Youth Academy at Sheffield United.

Although still a trainee, on the 5 May 2000 he debuted for the first team in a match against Swindon Town.  It was Sheffield United’s final League match of the season and the following day Jagielka was given a professional contract with the club.  In January 2001 he reaffirmed his position with the team when he signed a new 3 year contract.

He continued to play well and soon found himself sought after by other clubs, with bids coming in from Leeds United, West Ham United, Wigan Athletic and reportedly Bolton Wanderers.  Sheffield rejected all the bids, despite the increasing amounts, and Jagielka signed a new 3 year deal with his club in August 2006, making Captain around the same time and taking his club into the Premiership.

After Sheffield’s relegation at the end of the 2006 - 2007 season, Jagielka signed for Everton for £4 million, which was the highest deal ever accepted for a player by Sheffield United at that time.  His first goal for his new team came against Az Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup and with a continually good performance he picked up Player of the Month and Player of the Season Awards.

Jagielka played for the U21 international side, but finally came on for the senior international team as a substitute in a match against Trinidad and Tobago in June 2008.  He came on again against Spain on the 11 February, playing the full first half.

His last international was played against the Ukraine on 1 April 2009.
