England Players Profiles - Robert Green

Born in Chertesy, Surrey, Robert Green began his youth career playing football in the Norwich City Youth system and went on to sign a professional contract with the side in 1999.  He made his debut for their first team on 11 April 1999 keeping a clean sheet against Ipswich Town and after the departure of Norwich City’s first goalkeeper, Andy Marshall, in 2001, Green became a first team regular.

Green kept an impressive record of clean sheets over the following two seasons and helped his side win promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2003 - 2004 season, getting himself nominated for Norwich City Player of the Year in the process.

Relegated for the 2005 - 2006 season saw Green’s play suffer, with only 7 clean sheets from the 42 League appearances he made.  He picked up an injury during the warm up before a match against Sheffield Wednesday and was rested for the remainder of the season.

In August 2006, Green moved to West Ham United in a £2 million deal, making his debut on 22 October 2006 in a 1 - 0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.  Two impressive performances after that match saw Green help West Ham keep their Premier League place.

In the 2007 - 2008 season, Green played every game and received the Hammer of the Year title. He continues to play for West Ham today.

At international level, Green was called up to claim his first cap for the senior team in May 2005 when he appeared against Colombia.  He was selected for the 2006 World Cup squad but suffered an injury in May 2005 and was replaced on the team while he recovered.

Green won his second cap on 12 February 2009 against Spain, and played his first start for the team on 6 June 2009 against Kazakhstan.  His last appearance was against Egypt on 3 March 2010.
