Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston in Merseyside and started his footballing career with Whiston Juniors until he caught Liverpool’s attention and joined their youth team at the age of 9. He never made it into schoolboy football, signing his first professional contract with Liverpool in November 1997 and has remained with them throughout his entire career. Steven is currently the club captain. |

He played his debut match for the first-team on 29th November 1998 when he came on as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers. His playing style leaned towards defence but his first goal came against Sheffield Wednesday during his first season, a game they won 4 - 1.

In the 2000 - 2001 season he clocked up an impressive 50 starts in all competitions and his contract was extended with a new four-year deal. |

| In 2004 and 2005 Gerrard turned down two bids from Chelsea, one for a reported £20 million, preferring to stay with Liverpool instead, and after the second bid was refused he reaffirmed his position with the Reds by signing another 4 year contract. |

Gerrard continued to score goals for the club in national and international competitions, and in April 2008 he appeared for the 300th time against the team he started out against, Blackburn Rovers, scoring the opening goal to mark the occasion. |

At international level, Gerrard made his debut on 31st May 2000 against Ukraine. He made an appearance as a substitute at Euro 2000 and scored his first goal for England during the 2002 World Cup qualifiers in the famous 5 - 1 win over Germany |

He went on to appear regularly at international level and was handed the Captain’s armband briefly during 2008, eventually giving that honour up to John Terry |
