England Players Profiles - Wayne Bridge

Wayne Bridge was born in Southampton and, although he moved to Winchester as a child, it wasn’t long before he was back in his home town and training at the Southampton Academy.

He turned professional in January of 1998, playing his debut match for the Southampton first team in August of that year when he came on as a substitute for an injured Beresford.  His first full start came in the very next match when they lost 5 - 0 to Charlton Athletic and he completed his first season with 23 appearances.

His skill continued to impress, with demonstrations of power which included a strong free-kick over the wall to score in the last match of the 1999 - 2000 season against Wimbledon.  This was his first senior goal.

Bridge remained with the club until 2003 when he moved to Chelsea as part of a £7 million deal.  He started well and in the Champions League quarter-final in the 2003-2004 season he scored a vital goal in the 88th minute which put Arsenal out of contention.

In the first leg of the Carling Cup match against Wycombe Wanderers in 2007, he swapped his usual position and played up front, scoring a goal for his team.

In January 2009 Bridge moved to Manchester City in a deal worth £10 million, and debuted two weeks after signing in a League win against Wigan Athletic.

Bridge appeared for the England Youth sides, finally making his first  appearance for the senior side on 13 February 2002 against the Netherlands.  He substituted twice in the 2002 World Cup, but made no appearances in the Euro competitions two years later.

His last international match for England was against Brazil on 14 November 2009.
