Jamie Carragher sends Arsenal warning to Liverpool boss

Carragher believes Arsenal can compete with Liverpool this weekend

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that he is concerned with the high defensive line from the Reds as they prepare to host Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side are currently top of the table with the perfect tally of six points after the opening two games and this has only been replicated by the Gunners, who are just behind them on goal difference.

The Reds have had the better of the Gunners in the last three meetings at Anfield where they have beaten them 3-1, 4-0 and 5-1 respectively but Carragher anticipates a much challenging contest this time around.

While Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are bound to test the Gunners’ defensive resolve, Carragher is also concerned with the Reds’ high line against the pace and clinicalness of the Gunners’ attack.

Speaking on the Reds’ defensive shape, he told Sky Sports: “I don’t like it and I think they’ve been lucky and fortunate at different times this season to get away with it.”

The former England international added that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe are bound to offer a different challenge to the Reds backline, which has regularly sought to play the offside trap.

Cahill on cusp of Arsenal free transfer move?

Arsenal have tabled their first offer to sign free agent Gary Cahill. The 33-year-old defender, whose contract with former club Chelsea expired last season, has received offers from Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and now the Gunners are the most recent option that the former England international has to pick from.

After seven years with the Blues, Cahill opted to leave Stamford Bridge in favour of a move elsewhere. Today it has emerged that Arsenal manager Unai Emery wants to sign Gary Cahill as a backup centre-back for Rob Holding, who is expected to emerge back in to the first-team this season once he has fully recovered from injury. Unai Emery is also set to sell Shkodran Mustafi in the next three weeks and it is understood that Cahill is wanted not just as an important member of the squad, but also to help educate and teach the young Holding. Interestingly, both Holding and Cahill both came through the ranks at Bolton.

It is understood that Arsenal are now clear favourites to wrap up a deal for Cahill and that a one year contract is on the table at the Emirates.

Tierney to make Arsenal move next week?

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has revealed that the club are still waiting to hear back from Arsenal regarding a transfer for left-sided defender Kieran Tierney, who has been linked with a move to the North London club for a fee of £24 million. The Scotsman is comfortable playing on the left or centre of defence.

Arsenal have had a busy period in the transfer window, signing Nicolas Pepe for a club record fee and securing a deal for Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid.

Celtic are unhappy that their valuation has yet to have been met, but Arsenal are expected to seal a deal for the defender before the transfer window slams shut.

“Obviously the window in England shuts on Thursday,” said Celtic manager Lennon.

“It can be an unsettling period for any player. We have rejected two bids and the clubs know the valuation that we value Kieran [Tierney] at and it’s not been met.

“He is dealing with it very well. We are living in an age now where it’s coming at you from all angles, especially on social media.

“He is only 22. We have to be mindful of that as well. He is trying to keep his feet on the ground and stay focused on the present.”
