Arsenal to swoop for Championship defender?

Worrall wanted by Arsenal in January
Football Transfer Centre

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a January move to secure the signature of defender Joe Worrall from Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old, who spent the previous campaign on loan with Rangers in the Scottish top-flight, has been ever-present for Forest in the Championship this term.

According to Football Insider, the Gunners have been impressed by the progress of the former England under-21 international and they plan to send scouts to watch him in action against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.

It is added that the north London giants’ desire to land a new centre-back could see them make the move for Worrall when the transfer window reopens in January.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has regularly depended on Sokratis and David Luiz for the central defensive duties in the Premier League but the combination has failed to work out.

In the 13 top-flight games this season, the Gunners have conceded 19 goals and that stands as the joint-worst defensive record from the top half of the league standings..

Smalling set for permanent Roma deal?

Serie A giants AS Roma are reportedly confident of signing Chris Smalling on a permanent basis from Manchester United when the season comes to a close.

The England international joined the Giallorossi on a season-long loan from the Red Devils over the summer but they were not able to agree on the option to buy.

Earlier this week, it had been indicated that the Red Devils may consider keeping the services of Smalling next season with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer impressed with the centre-back’s performances in Rome.

However, according to Sky Italia, that does not seem the case and the Italian are growingly optimistic of committing the central defender to a long-term contract with the club.

Smalling, who made 34 appearances for the Red Devils last season, is currently said to be valued at around £12.9m and that remains within the range of the Giallorossi next summer.

Roma recently registered a second successive league victory and that has propelled them into the top four. Next up, they have a tricky challenge with Napoli, who are one point behind them, making the trip to Stadio Olimpico.

Reece James news

James suffers minor ankle concern

Chelsea defender Reece James has reportedly withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad after suffering a minor recurrence of the ankle problem picked up during the summer.

The teenager returned from a lengthy ankle injury last month to make his Blues debut against Grimsby Town in the League Cup and he managed to impress with a goal and an assist.

According to Goal.com, James has sustained an ankle concern in training with the Young Lions and he has been sent back to the Blues’ Cobham base for further treatment.

However, the setback does not appear serious and he could return to regular training ahead of the Blues’ Premier League clash against Newcastle United next weekend.

James has been touted by the fans as the future right-back of the club but manager Frank Lampard has so far resisted the prospect of starting him ahead of club-captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea are presently behind fourth-placed Leicester City on goal difference. They have the opportunity to win their fifth game on the bounce across all competitions when Newcastle visit the Bridge.

Ruben Dias news

United eyeing winter move for Dias?

Manchester United are reportedly planning an approach to sign Benfica’s Ruben Dias when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

The Red Devils landed the services of Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a deal worth £80m last summer and the Englishman has already cemented his place as a regular at the heart of the defence.

Still, it appears that the club are aiming to add more quality in the central defensive deparment and Record claims that they may come up with an approach for Dias in January.

Dias currently has a £59m release clause on his contract with Benfica but reports have emerged that the Portuguese giants will renew his deal in the coming weeks to increase that value to £79m.

Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe have partnered Maguire in central defence this term and it seems that the Red Devils are still searching for a long-term partner for the England international.

Sule: rejected England move in favour of Bayern
Football Transfer Centre

Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule has revealed that he had an option to move to England and sign for either Tottenham or Manchester United prior to moving to the Bavarian side. Sule arrived in Munich from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim in a 25 million euro transfer deal in 2017.

Instead, Sule opted to stay in his home country and has now gone on to represent the German full national team. Many consider Sule to be one of the best centre-backs in the world.

“It was a thought to go to the Premier League [in 2017],” the 24-year-old revealed.

“This is one of the leagues in which I really want to play. At the time, however, I saw the change to Munich as the best step. And, as you can see, I am very happy at Bayern.

“Not only because I got my way, but also because the fans and all the staff are great.”

Man Utd reportedly were very close to securing a deal to sign Sule back in 2017, with a transfer fee of 20 million euros agreed between the Old Trafford outfit and Sule’s then club Hoffenheim.

Unai Emery hints at midfield role for Arsenal defender

Emery praises Chambers’ versatility

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has hinted that Calum Chambers could be utilised in the midfield, should there be the requirement over the course of the season.

The England international has already played at centre-back, right-back and left-back this season and he has impressed in each of those positions and contributed one goal and two assists.

In a press conference, Emery talked up the versatility of the former Southampton graduate and said that the 24-year-old may feature in the centre of the park if required.

“He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right back, centre back, left back like tonight [against Nottingham Forest], and we can use him in the midfield also.” he told the club’s official website.

Chambers may have to settle for a bench role on Monday night when the Gunners face Manchester United on the road in the Premier League. The Gunners go into the game with 11 points on the board and they can break into the top four with a draw or a win against the Red Devils.

Lampard backs James to get better with more gametime under his belt

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes Reece James can perform much better on the playing field following his impressive debut against Grimsby Town in the League Cup third round.

The teenager had suffered an ankle injury while on international duty with the England Under-20 side during the summer and that meant that he had to go through a rehabilitation phase which delayed his Blues debut.

Against Grimsby, James flourished on the right side of the defence throughout the 90 minute and he capped the performance with two assists and a sublime goal from outside of the box.

This has already earned him plenty of plaudits from the club’s faithful but Lampard feels the right-back can get better, considering he has just returned to first-team action after an injury setback.

“His game will get much better. Reece’s performances last year at Wigan when he was in the Team of the Year in the Championship showed the talent he has got and he is going to be a big player for this club,” he told Football.London.

Cesar Azpilicueta has been commanding the right-back position in the Premier League this term and the Spaniard is likely to get the nod ahead of James this weekend, given he is also the captain of the team.

James will definitely earn more gametime in the other competitions as the season progresses and a couple of more standout displays will no doubt put the pressure on Azpilicueta, who has been error prone this season.

Smalling set for Roma loan move – Solskjaer
Football Transfer Centre

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Chris Smalling will be heading for a fresh challenge with AS Roma before the European transfer deadline.

The England international has been out of contention for a central defensive role since the start of the season with Solskjaer preferring Victor Lindelof and summer signing Harry Maguire.

As such, there had been the speculation that Smalling may head through the exit door and Solskjaer has now acknowledged that the centre-back will make the move to Roma on a temporary deal.

“It’s just come up the last couple of days, this opportunity [Roma] for Chris. At the moment we’ve got six fit centre-backs. I couldn’t promise Chris regular football. I think he’ll enjoy the experience over there,” he told MUTV.

Aside from Smalling, Alexis Sanchez has also made the loan departure to Inter Milan in the past 24 hours but both players are expected to return to Old Trafford next summer with no buy option included.
