Drinkwater set for Chelsea return

Burnley will reportedly turn down the option to extend the loan contract of midfielder Danny Drinkwater beyond the turn of the year. The 29-year-old joined the Clarets from the Blues on a six-month loan deal in August to resurrect his flagging career but things have failed to pave the way as planned.

Drinkwater has been sidelined from first-team duties since September after getting injured in a brawl outside a nightclub and he has yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Clarets.

According to The Sun, Sean Dyche‘s side have the option of extending the midfielder’s temporary deal by another six months but they are likely to turn down the option.

The former Premier League midfielder has struggled to command regular gametime since his move to Chelsea and he has managed 12 league appearances over the past two years.

Blues boss Frank Lampard has already deemed Drinkwater as surplus to requirements and the midfielder would certainly have to pursue another challenge elsewhere, should Burnley send him back to Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho being lined up for Real return?

Real Madrid are rumoured to be lining up Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho as a replacement for Zinedine Zidane in January, after a disappointing run of form leaves the La Liga side off of the pace in the league table. Real have important games upcoming with Galatasaray in the Champions League and an all important game with Barcelona to be rescheduled.

Jose Mourinho has been very vocal on television in recent times about his desire to return to football management, particularly in England.

However, at this point it is uncertain where the Portuguese might end up.

The Daily Mirror reports that after the 1-0 defeat to minnows Real Mallorca, the Real Madrid board convened to discuss Zidane’s future, with the Frenchman receiving a vote of confidence ahead of Tuesday’s key game against Turkish giants Galatasaray. So far this season Real Madrid have been unable to win in the Champions League, with a draw against Club Brugge and a defeat to PSG leaving Zidane under increasing pressure for his own future at the club.
