Solskjaer confirms attacker comeback

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Jesse Lingard has returned from a hamstring problem ahead of the Europa League clash against Partizan Belgrade.

The England international sustained the injury during the closing stages of the 0-0 draw against AZ Alkmaar this month and he has since been absent for the meetings against Newcastle United and Liverpool.

Speaking ahead of the Partizan game, Solskjaer has confirmed that the United graduate is back in contention for the first-team duties but he has yet to decide on the attacker’s playing time against the Serbian opponents.

“It’s fantastic to have him back fit. He’s been so lively and bubbly in training. I don’t know how much game time we’ll give him but he looks like he needs to catch up on lost time,” he told MUTV.

Manchester United have failed to win any of their previous 11 matches away from home and Solskjaer will be hoping that the Red Devils can put the unwanted record to bed against Partizan.

Lampard delivers injury update on two players

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has provided an update on Ross Barkley and Cesar Azpilicueta ahead of the Champions League clash against Ajax.

The Blues secured a close 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League at the weekend but there were injury concerns for Barkley and Azpilicueta.

In a report covered by Football.London, Lampard said that Barkley ‘turned his ankle’ during the Magpies game and stated that the England international would be assessed ahead of the midweek clash.

Meanwhile, Azpilicueta appeared to be struggling with a foot injury towards the end of the Magpies encounter but Lampard feels the defender has not suffered any injury of concern.

Chelsea have won their last five games on the bounce under Lampard and they are currently occupying the fourth spot in the Premier League standings with 17 points on the board.

In Europe, the Blues have attained three points from the opening two Champions League games and face a crucial period ahead with the double header against Ajax – starting with the away game on Wednesday night.

Jesse Lingard news

Lingard out of Magpies clash

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Jesse Lingard won’t take any part against Newcastle United after picking up a hamstring injury.

The England international came on for the final 15 minutes of the Europa League clash against AZ Alkmaar last night but he could not finish the game after pulling up with a hamstring concern in stoppage time.

In the post-match press conference, Solskjaer confirmed that Lingard has indeed suffered an injury setback and he won’t be available until after the international break.

“He tweaked his hamstring so he didn’t feel like he could risk it, but hopefully it’s not too bad. Probably not Newcastle, but he should be ready for Liverpool,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s official website.

Aside from Lingard, Solskjaer provided an update on Paul Pogba by stating that the French midfielder is unlikely to return from an ankle problem for the trip to St James’ Park.

Manchester United are currently languishing in the 10th spot in the league table and have accumulated just nine points. They will face the Magpies on Sunday in the search for their first away win since March.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has heaped praise on young Chelsea duo Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount ahead of the Premier League meeting between the sides.

Abraham and Mount have been regular starters for the Blues since the beginning of the campaign and they have already scored 10 of the 11 goals in the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Soccer Saturday, Henderson appreciated the progress of the young Blues duo, who have contributed hugely towards the club’s proceedings in the early part of the season.

He told: “They’ve got young kids but they’re top players, and certainly will be in the future. They’ve got huge potential with the likes of Mason [Mount] already training for England, I can see he’s got the right mentality to play football.

“Technically he’s very good. Everyone can see that he’s hungry to be a very good player and is a very exciting prospect. He’s started the season very well along with Tammy [Abraham].”

Mount has contributed three goals for the Blues this season. In comparison, Abraham has fared much better with seven goals which have all come from the past three league games.

Mount is currently a major doubt for the Reds game with an ankle problem picked up during the midweek Champions League clash against Valencia and a late fitness test may determine his involvement.

Reece James news

Chelsea receive double injury boost

Chelsea have received a fresh injury boost with young duo Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James tipped to return to first-team action following the ongoing international break.

Hudson-Odoi suffered a serious Achilles injury during the penultimate month of the previous campaign but he has made a swift recovery to participate with the Blues in regular training.

James, meanwhile, has been a short-term absentee following the ankle problem sustained on England Under-20 duty but he appears close to making his Blues debut after similarly returning to first-team training.

According to injury analyst Ben Dinnery, both players are set to make their injury comebacks following the international break and they could take the playing field by the end of the month.

Hudson-Odoi’s absence has not hampered the team drastically with the emergence of Mason Mount while Tammy Abraham has been able to show his goalscoring exploits.

On the other hand, James has been regarded as the future choice for the right-back spot but he could be handed with an early debut, considering the poor form of Cesar Azpilicueta in the role this season.
